Event Description: “The National Gallery of Jamaica is pleased to invite submissions for the juried section of upcoming Jamaica Biennial, which will now be held from February 26 to May 28, 2017 and will thus be the 2017 Jamaica Biennial. The Jamaica Biennial, previously known as the National Biennial, is the National Gallery’s flagship biennial exhibition. Designed to encourage the development of art in Jamaica and its local and international exposure, the Jamaica Biennial includes works of art in all media and genres by a wide variety of artists who enter the exhibition through the jury system or by special invitation. The juried section is open to all artists resident in Jamaica and of immediate Jamaican descent, irrespective of residence. While thus mainly focused on the Jamaican and Jamaican Diaspora artists, the exhibition now also includes a select number of specially invited Caribbean and other international artists. The exhibition will be shown at the National Gallery of Jamaica in Kingston; National Gallery West in Montego Bay; and other venues to be announced. About the Artist: “Peter Sheppard is a self-taught artist whose work continues to develop into his own signature of a type of stylised realism appearing typical of our environment, but is in fact drawn from the artist's soul. Sheppard chooses to paint in long overnight studio sessions. He explains: 'I believe this is the most productive time of day for me as it coincides with the creation and dawning of a new day - This is when I feel my most creative energy.' Peter recently retired from the Travel Industry in which he has worked since leaving school at 17 years of age. He also designs and produces costumes for children and adults for Carnival. Over the past several years he has taken his costumes abroad and participated in Fantasy Fest in Key West, Florida where he has won the top prizes ... Not surprisingly, it is the good Sheppard who guides his flock through thickets, over waterways & onto lush green tropical pastures, to find beauty in the depths of pastoral life. But, how does Sheppard transport us to these idyllic places, which we recognize as being within the Caribbean, yet if we dare to look, they cannot be located? The foliage is distinctively Caribbean: Coconut palms, ferns, silk cotton trees and every aspect of flora and fauna that our region has to offer may be found in Sheppard's art. About the Artist: “Selris James was born in Trinidad on November 28, 1974. His mother, Gwenie James, was not aware that she had contracted Rubella (German Measles) during her pregnancy and had no idea that her son would be at risk of damage from the infection. By the age of two, Selris had been diagnosed as blind and profoundly deaf. The removal of cataracts at age 3 allowed Selris some limited vision and by the time he was 6 it was evident that he was a highly intelligent and artistically gifted child. However, because of his dual impairments, both the School for the Deaf and the School for the Blind declined to accept him. With the generous support of the Port of Spain Rotary Club, Selris was finally enrolled at the Immortelle Children’s Center for students with disabilities, where he learned basic academic and computer skills and was much loved for his outgoing and enthusiastic personality. Over the years, his visual impairment became worse as he gradually lost all vision in his right eye and relied only on the limited sight in the left eye. In addition, the lack of opportunity to learn sign language left Selris with extremely limited communication skills and he has never been able to gain employment. Nevertheless, Selris never lost his love of art and became particularly enamored of using Photo Shop to draw intricate representations of buildings and a variety of a natural scenes ... A modest art show at the University of Miami in November, 2015 encouraged Selris to realize that his art work is valuable and he continues to produce at a steady rate, despite very limited resources ...” — Read more: Selris James Biography

The Museum of San Juan is honored to present the blue work of the plastic and sanjuanero artist Arnaldo Roche, with pieces never before exhibited in museums or spaces of the country. The exhibition brings together a selection of 24 works by this well-known Puerto Rican artist that represent an interesting approach to his work of great dimension. The exhibit returns to Puerto Rico after being presented at the Atlantic Center for Modern Art (CAAM) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain, being the artist's first solo exhibition in a European museum. About the Artist: “Painter Roche Rabell began his artistic training at the Luchetti School of Art in Santurce, where he studied under Lope Max Díaz. He later studied architecture at the University of Puerto Rico and art at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he completed his MFA in 1984. Since then, he has devoted himself entirely to painting. His work is found in important collections around the world, and he has taken part in several international events, earning numerous awards and great critical recognition. He has developed a unique style based on the application of layers of bright colors, which he covers with black and then rubs with a pallete knife to create dramatic and revealing images. Many of his paintings use live models, whom he wraps in raw canvas and then, using frottage, imprints on it the contours of their bodies.
