Lorna Goodison CD (born 1 August 1947) is a Jamaican poet, a leading West Indian writer of the generation born after World War II, currently dividing her time between Jamaica and Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she teaches at the University of Michigan. Poet and literary scholar Edward Baugh says: "one of Goodison’s achievements is that her poetry inscribes the Jamaican sensibility and culture on the text of the world". This is a review for By Love Possessed: Stories by Lorna Goodison - Jamaicans living in Jamaica and in the states while loving and not loving is an idea about what each story is about. Lorna Goodison in By Love Possessed made me feel as if I were in the center of a neighborhood where houses had no walls. This feeling gave me the ability hear and see exactly what was going on with each person in a story. I have never liked all the stories in a collection. In this anthology I only disliked one. However I did have trouble reading the Jamaican dialect. It slowed down my usual reading pace. I don't know the answer to whether the short stories feel more real because of the Jamaican speech patterns. The author does so well describing foods and places I feel the intensity of each story would remain just as strong if written totally in American. I am looking forward to reading Lorna Goodison's poetry and a book titled From Harvey River. This is a review for From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her Island by Lorna Goodison - Deep in the recesses of my childhood memories, I can conjure up the word 'rookumbine'. I vaguely know that it's the name of a song, but memory eludes me even after reading the words on page 12 of Lorna Goodison's lyrical tribute to growing up in Jamaica. Her story of four generations of her family, who gave Harvey River (near Lucea, Hanover) its name, crafts a lovingly evocative portrait of Jamaican traditions, customs and folklore. When her parents encounter financial difficulties and are forced to leave their well-appointed home in Malvern, St. Elizabeth to take up residence in a tenement yard on Orange Street in Kingston, hard times become their everyday reality, and their former comfortable life becomes a dream world to which they can never return. The author's mother, Doris, the central focus of the memoir, is an awe-inspiring vision of the selfless strength and devotion of Jamaican motherhood in all its glory. This book brought back tender memories of childhood, of duppy stories, rolling calves and other terrors, and lots of distinctly Jamaican pleasures I hadn't even known I'd forgotten. While it was a delightful trip down memory lane for me, this beautifully crafted and engaging account of the joys and sorrows of four generations of the author's family holds immeasurable cross-cultural appeal. Event Description: The National Gallery at Forty - “The National Gallery of Jamaica is the oldest and largest public art museum in the English-speaking Caribbean and opened its doors, originally at historic Devon House, on November 14, 1974 and the Gallery will thus be celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year. Much has happened since the Gallery first opened and the fortieth anniversary provides us with an opportunity to remember and celebrate; to reflect on what has been achieved, and what is left to be done; and in doing all of this, to plot the most productive future trajectories. Devon House was a beautiful and popular location but the National Gallery quickly outgrew these premises, because of its expanding collections and exhibition programme. The Gallery thus moved to its present, much larger and modern premises on the Kingston Waterfront in 1982 and while there have been plans for a new National Gallery building, our present location has become our de facto long term home. We are about to start a programme to develop our present building to current museum standards and recently, we have also added an extension in Montego Bay: National Gallery West, which opened on July 11 at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre on Sam Sharpe Square …The first major event will be the exhibition ‘In Retrospect’, scheduled to open on August 31, which will present a review of the NGJ’s history, in terms of the main exhibitions, acquisitions, other key events and, not to be overlooked, the personalities that have shaped its development. The second major exhibition will be the expanded Biennial, rebranded as the Jamaica Biennial, which is scheduled to open later in the year and will have a more international focus than before. About the Artist: “Danielle Barbeau was born in Montréal and was involved in the textile creations sector for many years. Her work was exhibited at the Salon des métiers d'art du Québec in Montréal and she founded Les Ateliers du Prince, on Prince Arthur Street. In the early 1990’s, she created her own clothing collection for children named Barbotine which was a success for 10 years. In 2001, she moved to Paris where she studied sculpture and drawing, which rapidly became a passion. From 2001 to 2005, the schools of Paris allowed her to learn and master the basics of the trade and develop her own personal style. She has studied and worked with renowned sculptors and at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, namely at the Canadian Cultural Centre (2003-2005), at the Salon des indépendants (2004-2005) and Boulogne-sur-Mer (2005), where she represented the Province of Québec. When she returned to Québec, she attended Jean-Louis Émond’s workshops (2005-2013) and was represented by NuEdge Gallery in Montréal (2008-2011). She also participated at the Dot Art Fair in Miami (2011), the Contemporary Art Fair of Saint-Lambert (2011-2013), where she earned the Public’s Choice Award, and recently the Toronto International Art Fair (2013). Since 2001, she has been totally dedicated to sculpture. She works in her studio in Rosemère and also at the Bronze Art Foundry in Inverness. In 2013, she opened Gallery QuatuArt in Rosemère with three other professional painters. Event Description: “The National Gallery of Jamaica’s Last Sundays programme for July 2014 is scheduled for Sunday, July 27, from 11 am to 4 pm. The featured performance, scheduled to start at 2 pm, is by the acclaimed Free Willies band, with Omar Francis as the lead singer and guitarist. They will play from their repertoire of reggae, rock and blues. The focus of the programme will be our permanent exhibitions, which has been supplemented with a temporarily reinstallation of the AD Scott Collection, a major donation to the National Gallery in 1999 by one of the pioneering art collectors of the post-independence period. Free tours and children’s activities will be offered, with a special focus on themes related to Emancipation and Independence in our collections, in keeping with the upcoming national observations. As is now customary for Last Sundays, admission to the NGJ will be free on Sunday, July 27, and the guided tours and children’s activities will also be free. The author engages in an exploration of the short story as a genre, using a varied array of styles, techniques and structures. The theme is very Caribeean and together with the technique transports you into the Caribeean at different stages during its colonial formation process. This co-winner of the 1993 MLA Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize has been expanded to include three entirely new chapters that add a Lacanian perspective and a view of the carnivalesque to an already brilliant interpretive study of Caribbean culture. As he did in the first edition, Benítez-Rojo redefines the Caribbean by drawing on history, economics, sociology, cultural anthropology, psychoanalysis, literary theory, and nonlinear mathematics. His point of departure is chaos theory, which holds that order and disorder are not the antithesis of each other in nature but function as mutually generative phenomena. Benítez-Rojo argues that within the apparent disorder of the Caribbean—the area’s discontinuous landmasses, its different colonial histories, ethnic groups, languages, traditions, and politics—there emerges an “island” of paradoxes that repeats itself and gives shape to an unexpected and complex sociocultural archipelago. This is a review for Mujer en traje de batalla (Spanish Edition) by Antonio Benitez-Rojo - An epic novel about the life of Henriette Faber. This woman, known only to a few specialists, was born in Lausanne in 1791 and, after being widowed and losing her son, she dressed as a man to study medicine at the University of Paris. She served as a military surgeon in Napoleon's Grande Armee, participating in campaigns in Russia and in Spain, where she was taken prisoner by Wellington's troops. After the war, she went to Cuba, where, under the name of Enrique Faber, she practiced medicine in the city of Baracoa, getting married there to another woman, Juana de Leon. When her identity was revealed, she was sentenced to serve four years in the Havana Women's Hospital. With her sentence served, she was exiled to New Orleans, on the condition that she never return to any Spanish dominion. Nothing more is known about her. Starting with these known facts, the author has drawn a large, cinematic portrait of the age and the life of a strong woman determined to live decently and freely in a patriarchal world. About the Artist: “Dennis de Caires was born in 1957 in Georgetown, Guyana and his family emigrated to England in 1970. He studied painting at Winchester School of Art and The Royal College of Art in London, including a term at Cité Internationale Des Arts in Paris. About the Artist: "Richard Rampersad is a nationally recognised artist who specialises in figurative painting and Ceramics. His patrons include many distinguished members of the private sector as well as corporate, academic, religious and cultural personalities. Rampersad was born in the year 1990 and grew up in the suburbs of Valsayn. He began his art education at the University of the West Indies, pursuing a Certificate in Visual Arts and then moved on to obtain his degree in Fine Arts with First Class Honours.
