Event: Sustain T&T presents “Green Screen - The Environmental Film Series 2018” - Opening Night Film 'Anote’s Ark' on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 @ 6:00pm-9:00pm; series continues through Saturday, November 3, 2018 at multiple venues — Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies; Contact Info: Email: sustaintt@gmail.com ; Websites: Green Screen T&T 2018 and Green Screen T&T-Facebook
Event Description: “Green Screen | The Environmental Film Festival is the only festival of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean, bringing local, regional and international films to our audiences for the last 8 years. The festival opens on October 31st at Digicel IMAX at 6pm. 2018 marked the inaugural year for a new festival platform, the Very Short Shorts Mobile Film Competition, supported by SWMCOL, FilmTT and NIHERST. With a focus on 'Stories of our Rivers and Seas' this year, the festival Opening Night will also see the world premiere of the finalists and prizes awarded for the best shorts. The feature film at the opening will be the T&T premiere of the fascinating documentary Anote’s Ark. Compelling and visually sumptuous, the film is set in Kiribati, a small Pacific Island country with a miniscule carbon footprint. Nevertheless, Kiribati is facing the most feared and modern existential threat to small islands – complete destruction from sea level rise. The filmmakers follow Kiribati’s President, Anote Tong, as he races to find a way to protect his nation’s people and preserve their heritage and dignity. Many Kiribati take their survival into their own hands and seek refuge overseas and the filmmakers are able to juxtapose the challenges Tong faces with those of Tiemeri, a young mother of six fighting to migrate her family to New Zealand. 'Climate Change is the greatest moral challenge for humanity,' says Tong. 'We haven’t risen to the challenge.' After the feature film, guests will be invited to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and conversation with environmental stakeholders, decision makers, filmmakers and people passionate about environmental concerns. The 2018 season will continue through November 3rd with free screenings at several venues, school screenings at IMAX, special events and panel discussions ...”Read more: Green Screen T&T 2018 and Green Screen T&T-Facebook
About Sustain T&T: “Sustain T&T has used the Green Screen platform to launch educational animated short films as well as short-format documentary content about climate change in Trinidad and Tobago. The response to our screenings and films has encouraged us to continue making and screening films, but one thing has become very clear to us – we would never be able to do any of this without the support of our sponsors, partners, collaborators and a public that is growing in its appetite for film and environmental knowledge. We make it happen together ... ... ”Read more: Green Screen T&T 2018 and Green Screen T&T-Facebook

Artist's Statement: “I paint what I love and fear. My technical practice and subject matter are inseparably intertwined, grounding and liberating the other in turns. Honouring the tradition of painting, I push the boundaries of what I know, experimenting with subject matter and technique. I find enthusiasm and peace in the search for meaning. Ongoing inspirations for my work are death and fear, rejection and isolation, unrequited love and loss, disillusionment and grief. I find the world a sad place, even with all of its blessings. The Tear Catcher collects my tears. The mystery of faith - trusting goodness - is life to the heart. I paint with dark colours to signify the active existence of soul residing beneath my awareness. In the Dark Night, I find that love is my heart’s deepest desire ...” - Roberta Stoddart — Read more at Y Art Gallery T&T and Y Art Gallery-Facebook

“Artwork by Guyanese Artist Aubrey Williams” Sept 13-Oct 27, 2018 at October Gallery

Event Description: “October Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Aubrey Williams, including works previously unseen, from Thursday, September 13, 2018 to Saturday, October 27, 2018. Born in Guyana, in 1926, Aubrey Williams’ life and art cannot be defined to one location. This new exhibition at October Gallery will explore how Williams’ oeuvre not only crosses borders between abstract and figurative modes but also between physical and cultural geographies. Exhibiting Williams’ work in the 21st century awakens a new assessment of British art history and challenges the canon. During his lifetime, the British establishment seemingly never allowed artists, including Williams, to move beyond the label of a Caribbean artist. Today, Williams’ work still resists classification. Williams’ Modernist oeuvre is being reborn into a world now ready for his art. Arriving in London in 1952, Williams enrolled to study at St Martin’s School of Art. Williams became aware of American Abstract Impressionism following two MOMA exhibitions at the Tate, in 1956 and in 1959. Works by artists such as Pollock, Gorky and Rothko excited Williams. Their explorations of technique, colour and scale were all aspects that he absorbed into his own richly allusive abstractions. Williams died in London in 1990 ...”  — Read more: October Gallery

Being held Friday, September 28, from 5:30pm to 7pm at the Rick Faries Gallery at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art ... Katherine was born and raised in Bermuda, she discovered a love of illustrating when she received her first set of inks. Exploring through this new medium helped Katherine realise her particular style and passion for illustrating. In her previous six solo shows, Katherine has always focused on the beauty of the Island, from the poinciana in her grandmother’s garden to glorious sea fans. Katherine’s artwork explores the natural habitat and elegance of the Island. Inspired by the minimal realism style of Charlie Harper, she uses colour, texture, geometric shapes and fine detail while playing with scale and composition. In her latest collection of illustrations; Wild, Uncaged and Free, Katherine has used a rich, opulent, autumnal colour pallet focusing on themes of Bermuda’s birds. Admission is free, but donations are welcome For more information, call 299-4000 or email mworks@logic.bm. Looking forward to seeing you there! ...
