Event Description: “Please join us for 'Botanical Art Worldwide: Flora of Bermuda' - Opening Reception on Friday, May 4, 2018 @ 5pm-7pm; show runs through Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at BSoA. The Bermuda Society of Botanical Artists is organizer for the exhibition planned for this beautiful volcanic island in the North Atlantic. Twenty artworks were selected for Flora of Bermuda, from twenty-seven submitted. Jurors for the exhibition were Margaret Best, Lisa Green, Janice Sharp, and Leslie Walker. Those included in this first juried botanical art exhibition reflect a range of the native and endemic plants of a semitropical climate that are able to withstand the often windy and salt-laden air. Examples include the spreading seaside morning glory (Ipomoea pes-caprae), the resilient Bay grape (Coccoloba uvifera) and the spiky Spanish Bayonet (Yucca aloifolia). Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Bermuda is home to the most northerly positioned Atlantic mangrove forests, and both red and black mangrove are represented in the exhibition. Delicate Bermuda maidenhair ferns (Adiantum bellum) that emerge from narrow cracks on both exposed rocky ledges and sheltered caves and the close-to-extinction Laffan Fern (Diplazium laffananiamum) compelled the local artists to make them an important feature. Not to be overlooked is the sturdy and attractive Bermuda olivewood (Cassine laneana) one of only three native trees.
