Event Description: “With the closing of the "Ace of Spades" show upcoming and with the "Carnival" versus "Junkanoo" discussion is so heated at this time, the NAGB has decided as a pendant to the exhibition to screen on Friday, July 11th at 7 p.m. the 1959 classic Technicolor film "Black Orpheus," a retelling of the Greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice, staged entirely during Brazil's Carnival and set in the modern context of a favela. The gallery will be open from 6-7 p.m. allowing visitors to experience the magnificence of our own Junkanoo music and visual culture and then, during the film, become drawn into the swirling glory of Carnival. About the Film: “Black Orpheus (Portuguese: Orfeu Negro) is a 1959 film made in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus. It is based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes, which is an adaptation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, setting it in the modern context of a favela in Rio de Janeiro during the Carnaval.
