Event: 5th Annual "Shakespeare in Paradise" Festival ENDS Saturday, October 12, 2013 -- Nassau Bahamas, West Indies
October 4-12, 2013, Nassau Bahamas
"Shakespeare in Paradise 2013"
ENDS Saturday, October 12, 2013
Special Year - This year is special to us in two main ways. First of all, and of course, it's our fortieth anniversary of independence, and so that's a special anniversary in itself. But second, this will be the fifth Shakespeare in Paradise festival, and we're really happy that we've made it this far!!! Sneak Peek - Here's a sneak peek at what we're working on: 1) A return to Shakespearean comedy. This year, we're returning to the comedic side of Shakespeare with The Taming of the Shrew—looking at love, marriage and women's place in it; 2) A revival of E. Clement Bethel's Sammie Swain, the folk opera most famous for the inspirational anthem "When the Road Seems Rough", now ubiquitous throughout Bahamian society.
Event Description - Based on a Cat Island folk tale, Sammie Swain hasn't been seen live since 1985 when it was presented at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Nassau.  The scheduled first performance of this work is October 4th. Student matinees are planned for the week of October 8-11. --
